Read OnAtlas / Craftsman lathes and mills seem to have some pretty detailed listing of serial numbers largely compiled by owners / fans of those machines. I really wouldn't expect Clausing to keep records going back 30-40+ years, but thought others might have found resources to help date their machines whether direct from the company or a user made ...

Read OnThe serial number is 004202. I'm not sure what year this would of been made. I do some larger machine work at times, so I'll have to decide if the Atlas is going to fit my needs, or if I'd be better off with a more commercial size machine. I have a MFC model. It has the belt guards but does not have the guard over the arbor support.

Read OnOn your mill, according to the serial number, it is actually an MFA. Check and confirm that the spindle pulley has three steps instead of four. As far as I can tell from the catalogs, Atlas didn't start calling the 12-speed machines M1A, MFA and MHA until they came out with the 8-speed M1B, MFB and MHB.

As the only miller in the Atlas range, it's surprising that the maker failed to list a complimentary vertical …

Read OnAge is a tough matter with Atlas machines. The serial numbers aren't coded at Clausing doesn't seem to keep historical records on them like they do for actual Clausings. I'd have to look in the basement to be sure, but the belts are both 4L section, I believe 39" and 42". Any parts store or supplier should have them.
Read OnRe: Atlas 10" Serial Numbers and Bearing Dates Jim, Thanks. That falls in line with some other dates that I have and is further evidence that in one, either the serial number or the date is incorrect. The brass plate looks like a Navy Plant Account tag. Up through at least the 1960's, shore stations at least had what they called a "Plant Account".

Read OnAn Atlas is a nice classic little horizontal mill. It's a salty looking but it has many limitations. The Atlas mill is very small, low powered, has a limited speed range, it uses Morse or B&S taper spindle tooling (PITA), the machine is not very rigid even if in good shape, and in general an Atlas mill is not nearly a stiff, capable, and ...

Read OnHi all, I have an Atlas horizontal mill I am working to get into operation. Nameplate says Model MF, Serial Number 004486. The belt from the countershaft to the spindle was very ragged so I followed the owner's manual steps to remove the spindle and backgear. As you know this is a fair amount of disassembly.
Read OnDon't count on an Atlas milling machine to be capable of doing much work in any reasonable length of time, especially in steel. They work well in brass, and make a good little mill for clock makers. They are just too light.Something like a small Burke that 2 guys can move is much more of a real machine. This is my opinion, having had both mills in my beginning stages.Don't …
